If your teen is about to head off to University, trade school or entering the workforce, you want to ensure they can get around easily and stay safe. You have looked at your finances and have decided to buy your teen a vehicle for this next phase of their lives.
When telling your teenager that you are going to buy them a car, savor it, for this is one of the most thrilling times in their life.
- Make sure you sit down with your teenager to create a list of what it is you both want in a vehicle.
- Decide on new or used? A sedan, truck, coupe, or SUV? What features or options do you expect the vehicle to have? All of these options matter, but most of all, focus on safety.
- Advise your child that although you want their opinion, you will be the one making the final decisions.
Once you have the checklist complete, head on over to your local dealership with the list in hand. Remember, it can be a bit overwhelming once at the dealership, so constantly refer back to your list to keep you both on track.
- Lay down important rules and consequences. It may be a good idea to create a contract they must sign that includes everything you expect from your child when the vehicle is in their possession, as well, as when they are driving it.
Rule - No texting while driving.
Rule Is Broken - Car will be taken away for a month and safety rules will be reviewed.
Make it completely clear that the car is a gift and should be respected. Once you and your teenager have an understanding of the vehicle and its rules, it's now time to go out and fully enjoy it. I would love to help you and your teen find the perfect car!
